Sunset light over the South African landscape — the beginning of an unforgettable journey.
Sunset light over the South African landscape — the beginning of an unforgettable journey.
Admittedly, I was a little hesitant about South Africa. I’ve seen many of the animals at the zoo, and we live in a beautiful area surrounded by vineyards, golf courses, and stunning coastlines… why would I need to go all the way to South Africa? Richard had been before and was eager to return.

One word – wow.

After flying into Johannesburg, where we had a lovely night and welcome dinner at the Intercontinental, the group flew on to George.

George and the Garden Route

George sits on the iconic Garden Route, a breathtaking drive along South Africa’s southern coast. Here, we stayed at Fancourt, a former farm turned sprawling resort and residential neighbourhood. Fancourt is now home to:

• Three exceptional golf courses: The Links (host of the 2003 Presidents Cup), Montagu, and Outeniqua
• Fine dining and lush gardens for wandering
• Peaceful, scenic surroundings perfect for walks and reflection

While Richard and the group enjoyed world-class golf, I spent my time exploring quiet streets and manicured gardens, soaking in the serenity.

A personal highlight was visiting the Knysna Elephant Park, an elephant rescue sanctuary. We fed the elephants and walked alongside them – these gentle giants left me completely awestruck. It was a memory I’ll cherish forever.

Cape Town: City, Coast, and Culture

Next, we headed to Cape Town, staying at the romantic Vineyard Hotel in Newlands – a property with eight acres of manicured gardens and a wonderfully calm feel.

Before golf, we explored the city:

• Some of the group took helicopter flips (short scenic rides!) over Table Mountain and the coastline
• Others wandered the vibrant harbour filled with shops and restaurants
• Richard and I indulged in Cape Rock Oysters at the Knysna Oyster Company, paired with a glass of local De Grendel Cap Classique Brut – amazing

The following day, we toured Cape Town by bus, visiting some of the city’s most beautiful and historic areas including Clifton Beach, the colourful and historic Bo-Kaap (Cape Malay Quarter) and finally, a cable ride up Table Mountain for breathtaking city and coastline views.

On our final day in Cape Town, the golfers played Pearl Valley Golf Club, a scenic Jack Nicklaus design. We non-golfers explored Franschhoek, a delightful historic town with charming shops and cafés. From there we visited Boschendal Wine Estate, where we enjoyed a tasting (Chenin Blanc and Pinotage – both delicious) and a “local flavours” lunch.

Some of that Pinotage even made it back to Australia – though it didn’t last long once shared with friends!

Kruger: Wildlife and Wonder

There is a peaceful happiness that seems to transcend the entire area – the vastness, the warm locals, the beautiful wildlife. We all relaxed and really relished the art of simply "being".

We flew from Cape Town into Kruger International Airport, arriving to the great expanse of what is this magnificent and massive park (over 19,000 square kilometres / 7,000 square miles). There was green everywhere – and antelope near the landing strip!

We transferred to the simply stunning Buhala Lodge, a five-star, fully catered lodge on the banks of the Crocodile River. Our group was large enough to have exclusive use of the lodge and all its facilities. Every room was different – some with large balconies overlooking the river, others with private plunge pools.

The lodge opens onto an expansive verandah overlooking the river. Every afternoon was spent with gin and tonics, spotting elephants making their way to the riverfront… and eventually onto the property itself! Evening meals under the stars were shared with elephants (and even a baby hippo) helping themselves to the trees just below the verandah… simply magic.

One game drive absolutely solidified my desire to return to South Africa. It was early, cool, dusty… all the things you imagine on safari. We were constantly swivelling our heads, hoping to be the first to spot something. We were rewarded early – antelope, zebra, giraffes, and a lazy hyena in the distance.

And then… lions. Dad in the middle of the road having a nap, mums and cubs watching from the side. It was mesmerising and completely captivating – seeing these beautiful animals in their (almost) natural habitat.

After lunch in the park, we headed out again. An elephant family crossed the road in front of us – mum and big sister guiding a newborn, keeping the little one safe. We could have watched them for days.

Then the call came in. Our fabulous guide took off in a different direction and we joined two other jeeps. Finally… a leopard. She had just completed a kill and was dragging it into a tree for lunch and a nap. It felt like a private National Geographic special – just for us.

Our final day in Kruger included golf at Leopard Creek Golf Club, a Gary Player design bordering the park. Drinks at the iconic clubhouse wrapped up the golf portion before one last magical night at Buhala Lodge, dining with elephants and hippos below.

Kruger – and South Africa as a whole – completely stole my heart. I cannot wait to return.
